Alan's Story
As a relative late starter to the game of golf, I was introduced at the age of 14. It wasn’t long before I was hooked on this wonderful game. My £40 annual subscription was paid to Arbroath Artisan Golf Club which became my home for the rest of my school days. Arbroath’s P.G.A. Professional Lynsey Ewart has been and will continue to be a fantastic support to me and it was Lynsey who started me on my golfing journey.

By the time of my 18th birthday I was playing with a handicap of 5 and had become the first ever Arbroath Artisan junior to win the junior club championship in 2 consecutive years. I had a brief spell playing football not only for my local team, Arbroath Lad’s Club but also with Brechin City football club. A decision had to be made between pursuing either football or golf. And although I still have a great passion for football, I know I made the right decision in golf.
I flirted with the idea of doing sport science at university but at the age of 20 decided to train to become a P.G.A. Professional Golfer. I moved to Dunblane to become Bob Jamieson’s assistant at Dunblane New Golf Club and worked with Bob for 4 years until I qualified as a P.G.A. Professional. These were some of the best years of my life and have made some fantastic friends along the way.
I am currently attached to Ladybank Golf Club, which is a truly fantastic place. I’m working very hard on my game with P.G.A. advanced Professional Sandy Smith who has been a huge influence on my life.
